Background
John born & bred in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, now lives in Southampton with his wife Hilary. John (& Hilary) have been folk dancing for over 40 years. John has been a Folk Dance Caller for over 40 years & was a morris musician for over 20 years. Like many Callers, he got into calling by accident, standing in for the resident club caller who was working away from home. 'The rest', as they say, 'is history'. He calls for a wide variety of folk dance events, ranging from community barn dances, and club evenings, to public dances, ceilidhs, dances for the beginner as well as the enthusiast, festival workshops, dance weekends and folk dance holidays. John has called at several of the UK's Festivals (incl Sidmouth, Chippenham, Broadstairs, Eastbourne, Whitby, Purbeck & Bletchingley) & also for folk dance holidays in the UK, USA, New Zealand, Spain & France in recent years. In June '09 he was engaged to teach 'English Country Dancing' onboard one of Fred Olsen's Cruises. John supported by Hilary regularly leads folk dance courses / holidays for 'Halsway Manor', the National Centre for the Folk Arts & for 'HF' Holidays , one of the UK's leading leisure activity holiday companies. |

John enjoys calling for beginners as well as experienced dancers.
He enjoys the challenge of the workshop situation and workshop type dances.

- Contemporary Dances in all the above styles, including Ceilidh Dances,
- Running Set (also known as �Kentucky Mountain Squares� or in the USA �Old Time Dancing�).

- Social Dance is an artistic expression, but it has got to be fun too.

Summary

The vast majority of bookings are through personal recommendation and repeats comprising:
Public Dances for beginners & non-regular dancers (e.g. Community events, WI Events);
Private dances, weddings, anniversaries and other family celebrations.
John & Hilary run a series of Dance Weekends for enthusiasts entitled
The Light-hearted Dance Weekends,
at various venues around the country, Now only 1 per year, where John shares the calling
for the weekend with a guest caller. The music is provided by guest musicians
(usually a two-piece band). The events are fully subscribed almost every time.
John & Hilary also lead Dancing Holidays for 'HF Holidays'.
They also run a Contra Dance series entitled
'Chilworth Contras'.
